Kornati Archipelago
Kornati

Kornati Archipelago
is a National Park that consists of 148 islands, islets and reefs comprising an area of 69 km2. This is the place for avid eco-tourists because there are no modern facilities —only the magnificent, crystal-clear sea, its peace and quietness shared only with numerous species of land animals and sea life.

It is confirmed that 537 plant species exist on Kornati National Park land and it is believed that in total there are approximately 700-800 plant families represented. In-depth research on the animal life within the Park has not yet been conducted. The Park does include an interesting variety of birds, including the Eurasian eagle owl, peregrine falcon, kestrel, common buzzard, shag, and seagull.  Visitors are advised to avoid close contact with animals so as not to disturb them.
The Kornati Islands
were first colonized in the time of the Illyrians. However, small dwellings found on the Island of Zut, as well as the remains of towns and castles and numerous stone grave-mounds, testify to the fact that the Kornati Islands were significantly inhabited during prehistoric times.

During the 16th century the area belonged to the Venetian Republic but was leased to families from Zadar and mostly used for fishing. At the beginning of the 16th century a Venetian castle was built, serving as a place where a tax on fish was collected from the fishermen of the Kornati area. At the beginning of the 20th century the economy and life in the Kornati changed significantly. What used to be mostly intact landscape was divided into fields, causing a complex mosaic of drywall fences to be built (which today has become one of the main cultural attractions). Furthermore, the people of the region slowly began to migrate towards the main coast, leaving Kornati to sporadic fishing and farming.

The only way to access Kornati is to rent a boat that will take tourists to some of the attractions on the bigger islands. The excursion to Kornati is a day-long trip (we leave right after breakfast) that involves sailing, swimming, and occasionally  hiking.  An entrance ticket to the park and lunch will be provided.

This day visit to the Kornati Archipelago is included in both of our retreats.

It was proclaimed a national park in 1985 and is the seventh national park in Croatia. more
City of Zadar, Croatia

Zadar Croatia
, is the inspirational birthplace of great artists such as Juraj Dalmatinac (aka Georgius Mattei Dalmaticus or Giorgio Orsini), Luciano Laurana (aka Lucijano Vranjanin) and Andrija Medulic (aka Andrea Schiavone or Andrea Meldola de Hiadra).
